Science — experienced through the eyes of those who live and breathe it

Our educational visits are ran by our charity and based in The Learning Lab, an inclusive research space at our Old Market incubator where students can get hands-on with experiments and engage in conversations with scientists and engineers in the Science Creates community. As part of the experience, visits include behind-the-scenes tours of the wider incubator, offering a rare glimpse into Deep Tech companies at work.

The minimum age to visit The Learning Lab as part of a school group is Year 5 (9–10 years old), and we can accommodate a maximum class size of 30.

What youcan do in The Learning Lab

Educational visits

Hands-on workshops

Our STEM workshops are the highlight of our educational visits, offering young people the chance to experience hands-on science in a real-life lab setting. Held in The Learning Lab, these workshops feature interactive experiments linked to the national curriculum, helping students build skills and confidence to pursue STEM careers.

Designed by pioneering scientists from the Science Creates startup community, these sessions provide an inspiring window into the world of scientific innovation.

Behind-the-scenes tours

Step beyond closed doors to catch a glimpse of the future — see the specialist equipment and spaces where scientific breakthroughs happen, and meet the companies pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Our guided tours offer a chance to see cutting-edge research in action within high-tech labs. By witnessing real-world science at work, students gain a deeper understanding of how discoveries move from the lab into the real world.

Conversations with scientists

Inspiration often sparks in the presence of someone whose passion is so infectious, it becomes impossible to resist. Sometimes, it’s about finding someone whose journey reflects our own potential and opens doors we never considered.

By engaging with real scientists from a variety of backgrounds, learners can ask questions, explore diverse career paths and uncover the personal stories behind groundbreaking discoveries — gaining insight into the moments that ignited each scientist’s passion for their field.

Find out more about electric vehicles through home-made batteries, make balloon-powered cars to help you understand physics, discover what’s encoded in our DNA, and more.

Ways to support

Become a corporate supporter

Corporate donations provide the stable foundation our charity needs to maximise impact through long-term initiatives.

Make a donation

Curiosity is universal. Access to STEM opportunities is not. Individual donations — regular or one-offs — are crucial to ignite the spark of discovery in more young minds.

Testimonials

“I firmly believe that single events can change lives and that Science Creates Outreach has the power to cause these. Among the young people visiting there will perhaps be hundreds over the years who will be inspired to become scientists. By visiting The Learning Lab and seeing scientists, students discover the special atmosphere and reward that practical science offers.”

Dr John Manley

"All of the scientists who deliver workshops are enthusiastic and inspiring, and they interact well with the learners. I’m looking forward to the upcoming workshops in our second collaboration with the charity."

Jo Sweetland

"I loved visiting and doing fun experiments with my class. When I grow up I want to be a scientist and rent one of the labs here one day so that I can start my own invention company, just like the ladies at Science Creates!"

FAQ’s

Who are our educational visits for?

We welcome school groups, home educators, youth and community groups and special interest groups.

Our minimum age to visit is Year 5 (9-10 years old) and we have a maximum class size of 30.

If you're interested in corporate visits, get in touch.

When can we visit?

We have morning and afternoon sessions available from Tuesday to Friday. Morning sessions are approximately 9.30am - 11.30am and afternoon sessions are approximately 12.45pm - 2.45pm. However, we can be flexible around your timing requirements so just let us know what suits you.

How long are your sessions?

Approximately 2 hours (either a morning or an afternoon slot, from Monday to Friday).

What do the sessions include?

Each session involves all or some of the following, depending on the needs of your group: a tour of Science Creates, a hands-on workshop at The Learning Lab and a Q&A with a scientist.

Do I need to book before visiting?

Yes, all our visits are by prior booking only.

Where are you located?

The Learning Lab is within the Science Creates Old Market building, in Midland Road, BS2 0NS.

How do we get to The Learning Lab?

By train: we’re a 10-15 minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads train station.

By bus: we’re a 5-minute walk from the Old Market St bus hub.

By car: we have available parking spaces that you can use. If you need to book a parking space please mention this in your booking.

How much do we have to pay?

Science Creates Outreach is a charity with a mission to demystify careers in science, diversify the faces of science and empower confident, skilled problem solvers who will be our future scientists. In order to carry on offering workshops and sessions for young people, we have a suggested donation of £150 for a 2-hour visit (which works out as £5 per person for a class of 30). If this is not something you can afford, please let us know and we can discuss other options. We also have a 'Pay it Forward' scheme so schools/groups can donate additional funds to support others.

How do we pay?

Once we have arranged a date, agreed to a donation and booked you in for your visit, we will send details on how to pay.

Can we have lunch at Science Creates?

You are welcome to bring lunch and eat it outside on the grass in our grounds, but unfortunately no food or drinks are allowed in The Learning Lab — where our educational visits take place — so there are no indoor spaces for you to eat.

Are there safety rules for our visit?

Everything is designed around the age and ability of the learners visiting us, but before the day we will share a risk assessment with you for your visit.

On the day, we ask that long hair is tied back, all visitors wear covered shoes and there is no food or drink consumed in The Learning Lab.

Do you have any pre-visit resources?

Yes. Find out more about the location and some of the people you will meet on your visit here.
